Agency Profile

The Village of Mount Prospect is located 22 miles northwest of the City of Chicago.  It was incorporated in 1917, has a current population of approximately 54,000 and encompasses an area of about 10.3 square miles.  Census figures from 2010 place the population at 54,167, which represents a 3.7 percent decrease from the 2000 population. Overall, however, Mount Prospect’s population and total housing units has remained relatively stable over the past 30 years.

Founded in 1913, the Department is currently comprised of one Fire Chief, one Deputy Chief, one Fire Marshal, four Battalion Chiefs, 12 Lieutenants, 54 firefighter/paramedics and seven additional Administration/Fire Prevention Bureau personnel.  The Department responds to approximately 6,000 calls annually, covering 10.5 square miles from three fire stations.  Specialty teams and services include hazardous materials, technical rescue, dive, fire investigation, public education and emergency management.

The annual starting salary for a Mount Prospect firefighter for 2016 is currently $58,680.  Individuals that already have their paramedic certification receive an additional $5,500 incentive for an annual starting salary of $64,180.

Eligibility Requirements

The Mount Prospect Board of Fire and Police Commissioners is charged with the appointment of all firefighters. To be considered for employment, candidates must meet the following requirements:

• $30.00 non-refundable application processing fee;
• Be a United States citizen;
• Have no felony convictions;
• Possess a High School Diploma (or its equivalent);
• Have not less than 60 college semester hours from a nationally accredited college/university (or its equivalent) – the following shall be deemed to be the equivalent of the number of college credits as set forth;
  • Thirty (30) college semester equivalency hours for each full 12 months of non-disability service as a firefighter with another full-time, officially constituted and sanctioned fire department;
  • Thirty (30) college semester equivalency hours for each full 12 months of active duty in the military service of the United States (honorable discharge). Persons who were solely reservists (without active duty) shall not be eligible to claim these credits;
  • Thirty (30) college semester equivalency hours for demonstrating fluency in a language, other than English. Fluency shall mean a clearly demonstrated ability to read, write, and understand the language;
  • Sixty (60) college semester equivalency hours for applicants who are certified by the State of Illinois as a Paramedic;
  • Sixty (60) college semester equivalency hours for applicants who are certified by the State of Illinois, Office of the State Fire Marshal, as a Firefighter II or Basic Operations Firefighter;
• Possess a Valid Driver’s License;
• Submit proof of a valid Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) and Approved Ladder Climb card from a licensed agency before November 5, 2016 (card must be dated November 4, 2015 or later);
  • Candidates taking the CPAT/Ladder Climb between the deadline date and the written exam date must submit all other application documents by the deadline and provide a copy of the CPAT/Ladder Climb as soon as it is obtained.
    • CPAT/Ladder Climb may be obtained from one of the following agencies:
      • NIPSTA – Glenview, IL – www.nipsta.org
      • SUFD – Darien, IL – www.sufd.org
• Be 21 to under 35 years of age by the date of the application deadline (September 28, 2016), unless exempt by state statute.

Testing Process

The initial testing process will consist of two primary components: a traditional firefighter examination and a situational judgment test.  Both will be administered in a paper-and-pencil format.  The firefighter exam will assess job-related cognitive abilities, personality characteristics and behavioral traits.  The situational judgment test will assess job-related skills associated with interpersonal and problem-solving interactions similar to those you may have on the job.  You do not need to have any firefighter experience, training or knowledge to successfully complete these tests.

The written exam will be conducted on Saturday, November 5th, 2016 at Prospect High School, 801 W. Kensington Road, Mount Prospect, IL 60056. You are required to arrive at the testing location no later than 9:00 a.m. to sign-in.  Doors will open for sign-in at 8:30 a.m. and the written exam will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m.
