Job Skills / Requirements

Scott County Government is seeking individuals to provide for protection of life and property through the suppression and prevention of fires in response to emergency calls.  Duties include responding to scenes of fires, disasters, or other emergency incidents; protecting life and property through controlling, extinguishing and preventing fires; providing emergency medical services and care; regularly maintaining firefighting equipment, apparatus, stations and quarters.  In emergency situations, performs hazardous tasks requiring strenuous physical exertion for extended periods of time in cramped surroundings, hot and smoky environments with limited visibility and at considerable heights. Work schedule is 24 hours on duty, followed by 48 hours off duty.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from high school or possession of a GED
  • Individuals must be 19 years of age by the application deadline date.
  • A US citizen, and possess a valid driver’s license from the current state of residence.
  • Prior to an offer of an employment, candidates must possess a current CPAT (Candidate Physical Ability Test) certification unless exempt per KRS and Kentucky Fire Commission regulations.

Preference will be given to:

  • Certified professional firefighters who have completed 400 hours of training in accordance with the Kentucky Fire Commission
  • Candidates who possess Kentucky Emergency Medical Technician certification. Candidates will be required to obtain EMT certification during the recruit training period and maintain throughout employment with the Scott County Fire Department.

Pay and Benefits:

  • The starting pay is approximately $45,000 per year which includes the annual training incentive listed below. Additional credit will be given for prior related college degrees and work experience and the starting pay will be commensurate with qualifications.  An additional pay adjustment will be awarded on July 1, 2022 which we anticipate will increase the starting pay to approximately $46,000.

Qualified candidates will be invited to participate in a written and oral examination process and will result in the creation of a hiring list that will remain in effect for a minimum of three months. Candidates will have the option of taking the written exam on either Wednesday, June 1, or Thursday, June 2, 2022, at 6:30 p.m.  Interviews are scheduled for the week of June 13, 2022. Candidates will be given access to test preparation study materials after the application deadline date.  We plan to hire at least two individuals and up to five or more during this process.
