Fire Fighter and Equipment Operator
Salary Range $15.32 – $23.12
Eligible lists will not be utilized after a hire is made.
JOB DUTIES Under general supervision, performs aircraft rescue and firefighting duties involving air traffic or support operations where hazardous conditions are such that the expectancy for fire is high and potential for becoming destructive is great. Serves as firefighter/equipment operator of Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) vehicles at General Mitchell International Airport; to drive and maneuver vehicles to the most advantageous position for aircraft rescue; to operate pumps and perform firefighting, rescue and salvage operations; to respond to medical emergencies involving airport patrons and/or employees; to maintain fire and emergency medical equipment in response ready condition; to conduct inspections of structures, fueling vehicles/facilities for detection of fire hazards and the elimination of such hazards; to conduct fire
prevention and protection drills and instruct others in the techniques and methods of fire prevention; to maintain quarters and surrounding areas in a clean, sanitary and orderly condition; to prepare reports; and to perform such other duties as may be assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EXPERIENCE: Three (3) years of verifiable experience as a Certified Firefighter II required. Associate’s Degree in Fire Science or related field will substitute for up to one year of required experience. Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) certification/experience highly desired.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Specialized experience must include knowledge to drive and operate firefighting vehicles of significant complexity and size, and of the principles of hydraulics as they pertain to water flow, water pressure, water levels, line (friction) losses, etc. Knowledge of basic and specialized airfield and structural firefighting equipment (fire alarm system operation, fire extinguishing equipment operation, etc.), techniques, and procedures. Knowledge of basic building design, construction, and occupancy; and of the unique hazards associated with aircraft design, and cabin layouts to include the operation of hatch release mechanisms, and/or oxygen supply systems. Knowledge of Basic Life Support techniques, terminologies, and protocols. Skill in operating communications equipment. Ability to maintain good working relations; to communicate orally and in writing; and to lift and carry heavy loads. Knowledge of safety requirements as outlined in applicable safety standards, regulations, technical orders, and FAA Advisory Circulars.
EDUCATION: Graduation from High School or GED equivalent and a minimum of 30 semester hours of college credit are required; Associate Degree in Fire Science or related field preferred; State of Wisconsin Firefighter II Certification required; National Registry and/or Wisconsin Emergency Medical Technician-Basic License required and maintained throughout incumbency; Aircraft Rescue Firefighting (ARFF) certification highly desired; possession of a current and valid certificate of completion of the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) from an approved National Testing Network agency is required at time of application; National Incident Management System (NIMS) ICS 100, ICS 200, ICS 700 and ICS 800 certificates required at time of application; possession of a valid Wisconsin driver’s license required within six-months of being hired and maintained throughout incumbency.
NOTE 1: FOR APPLICANTS OUTSIDE OF WISCONSIN, an International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), Department of Defense (DOD), or Pro-Board Firefighter II certification will substitute for the State of Wisconsin Firefighter II certification.
NOTE 2: Appointee must acquire a Class 1 Airport driver’s license within three (3) months of appointment and maintain during incumbency. Appointee must establish and maintain security clearance in accordance with the Transportation Security Administration guidelines for unescorted access to secured areas of the airport during incumbency.
NOTE 3: Medical Requirements: A medical examination will be conducted before appointment to this position. Medical standards will be in accordance with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommendations. Appointee will be subjected to pre-hire, as well as, random drug screening during incumbency.
NOTE 4: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week
THE ORIGINAL EXAMINATION is open to qualified residents of the United States. Appointee must establish residency in the State of Wisconsin within six (6) months of appointment and maintain such residency during incumbency.

In accordance with Rule III, Section 12 of the Civil Service Rules, a noncompetitive examination will be held for this position. The noncompetitive examination will consist of criteria deemed appropriate by the Director of Human Resources to rank applicants on the eligible list for this position.
Federal Airport Security regulations require that applicants undergo a personal background and employment history verification before issuance of a badge that permits access to secure areas.
