General Definition and Conditions of Work: Entry Level Requirements: 21 years of age, High School Diploma/GED, Good Driving Record, and successfully pass a Written and Physical agility test. Lateral Entry Requirements: 21 years of age, High School Diploma/GED, Good Driving Record, successfully pass a Written and Physical agility test, have completed at least three years of service as a professional firefighter, and have the following certifications: Firefighter I & II, Hazardous Materials Operations, Emergency Vehicle Operators Course, & EMT-Basic.Performs fire suppression, emergency medical services and hazardous materials duties; does related work as required. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Fire/EMS Captain, Lieutenant or Senior Firefighter/Paramedic. Much of the work is performed under emergency conditions and frequently involves considerable personal hazard. Requires the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects, and some heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for depth perception, night vision, peripheral vision, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, oils, and wearing a self contained breathing apparatus. The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.

Essential Functions/Typical Tasks: Responds to emergency fire, medical related and hazardous materials situations; provides entry, suppression and rescue services; maintains equipment and facilities; continues training and instruction; performs firefighting and emergency medical duties. Responds to alarms and assists in the suppression of fires, including rescue, entry, ventilating, salvage cleanup and overhaul work; Responds to emergency medical calls, operates equipment, and transports victims to emergency care facility; Examines and evaluates patients medical condition to determine appropriate treatment and life saving procedures; Provides patient care and administers advanced life support techniques and treatment; Communicates descriptive patient information to authorized emergency room personnel, to obtain orders for administering advanced procedures; Makes presentations on emergency services for interested parties; Assists in maintaining fire apparatus and equipment and cleaning fire station and grounds; Participates in continuing training and instruction program, by individual study of technical material and attendance at scheduled drills and classes; Inspects, cleans and maintains fire hose, pumps, hydrants and related equipment; Performs other firefighting and related emergency tasks consistent with appropriate NFPA standard for position; May serve as relief driver and equipment operator if qualified; Conducts station tours and provides school demonstrations; Performs related tasks as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, techniques and equipment required for performing emergency medical treatment and specialized cardiac treatment; general knowledge of firefighting techniques and procedures, as applied to fire suppression; ability to learn technical firefighting principles and techniques and principles of hydraulics as applied to fire suppression; general knowledge of the street system and physical layout of the City; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to communicate orally and in writing; ability to understand and maintain effective working relationships with fellow associates and the general public; possession of physical endurance and agility.

Education and Experience: Two years or college, or an Associates degree, in fire science, emergency medical services or related fields, and at least one year of experience as a Firefighter, or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

Special Requirements: A driver’s license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the ability to obtain a Class B Virginia CDL permit with airbrake certification, during the one year probationary period is required. Certification as an EMT-P, Firefighter II, Hazardous Waste Technician, and in Emergency Vehicle Operations, is required. Must and maintain all department, State and Federal training and certification requirements for position.
