Department Overview: The City of Cocoa Beach Fire Department (CBFD) serves approximately 3.5 square miles of residential and commercial area as well as providing basic fire protection for the “Thousand Islands” area adjacent to Cocoa Beach in the Banana River. The 3.5 square miles of land mass is unique in shape in that it is a barrier island approximately 6.5 miles in length and approximately 1.7 miles wide at it widest point. The CBFD serves a population of approximately 11,200 year-round residents as well as an influx of seasonal residents, tourists, and visitors which can increase the area’s population to an average of 30,000 people a day during the tourist season.

The Fire Department operates 2 stations, staffed with 3 shifts of 8 personnel. Our shift personnel work 24-hour shifts to then have the next 48 hours off.

Administrative staff works Monday – Friday, from 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

All personnel are on call in the event of serious fire, emergency or severe weather situation.

Area Information: Every community in the country has unique characteristics all its own and Cocoa Beach is no exception. Nestled between the Space Complexes of the Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral to the north and Patrick Air Force Base to the south, Cocoa Beach has been shaped by its association with the Space Program.

Going back to the 1920’s when it was a sleepy isolated beach community through the years when the first astronauts trained and relaxed in the area, our small community has developed into a unique blend of residential, retirement, retail and tourist segments.

While these segments demonstrate the diversity of our community, we share an interest in the great outdoors in a tropical locale, in showcasing and protecting our environment and its wildlife and in sharing the quality of life that comes from excellent schools, responsible businesses and well-maintained parks and public facilities.

Population: Approx. 30,000 winter / 12,000 off season (does not take into account of beach visitors)
