Hiring & Employment

Become one of Albany’s Bravest!

The Albany Fire Department is actively recruiting qualified applicants for the position of “Firefighter/EMT”. To start the process the applicant must file an application for the “Firefighter Entrance Exam” with the Albany Municipal Civil Service Commission. This exam is typically held biannually in March.

The Albany Fire Department offers a competitive salary and benefits package as well as numerous opportunities for promotion. Additionally, as the Capitol of New York State, the City of Albany offers a wonderfully cosmopolitan urban environment, with a “small town” feel. As a resident of the City of Albany, you will have the ability to experience many diverse cultural, educational, and entertainment opportunities.

Upon receiving a passing grade, the candidate will be subject to a background investigation conducted by the Albany Police Department’s Professional Standards Division. The next step will be the passing of a physical agility test (CPAT). Candidates will also have to undergo a psychological and medical exam.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Candidates must have United States citizenship at the time of appointment. It is not necessary for admission to the examination.
  • Candidates must show evidence of graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma at time of appointment.
  • Candidates must have been legal residents of Albany, Columbia, Green, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schoharie, or Schenectady County for at least thirty days immediately preceding the date of the written examination.

Preference in appointment may be given to successful candidates who have been legal residents of the City of Albany for at least 30 days immediately preceding the date of the written exam.

Residency and other Requirements:

  • An applicant for competitive examination must be a legal resident on the date of the examination and must have been a legal resident of the City of Albany for at least 30 days immediately preceding the date of such examination, unless otherwise mandated by law. This residence requirement may be suspended or reduced by the Commission in cases where recruitment difficulties make such requirement disadvantageous to the public interest.
  • When preference in certification is given to residents of the City of Albany, in order to be included in certification as a resident of such municipality an eligible candidate must be a legal resident on the date of the examination and must be a legal resident of the City of Albany at the time of certification and at the time of appointment.
  • It shall be a condition of employment that candidates must possess a New York State class 5 driver’s license at the time of appointment and they shall maintain said license throughout their career with the Albany Department of Fire and Emergency Services.
  • It shall also be a condition of employment that candidates must possess a New York State Health Department Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-B) certification no less than 5 weeks prior to appointment and shall maintain said EMT-B certification throughout their career.
