ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The San Rafael Fire Department is a full-service department, providing services in fire protection and emergency medical care including patient transport services, disaster response and community support. Firefighters with the San Rafael Fire Department have a wide array of responsibilities including responding to emergency calls in an effort to protect life, property, and the environment, as well as completing activities related to community education in the areas of safety and fire prevention. Firefighters participate in comprehensive classroom and field-exercise training programs in order to be qualified to provide a high standard of emergency response and public service.
Paramedic License Requirements: Must have a valid California Paramedic License or national Registry Paramedic Certification Card* at the time of application.
*NOTE: The California Paramedic License must be obtained and maintained prior to appointment
IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
·   – Perform firefighting and fire prevention activities in an effort to protect life and property
·   – Participate in training sessions designed to maintain and enhance required skills
·   – Conduct fire and life safety inspections
·   – Provide emergency medical care
·   – Drive and operate fire apparatus and related equipment
·   – Work on a medical transport unit as assigned
KNOWLEDGE OF AND ABILITY TO:
·   – Demonstrate a strong foundational knowledge base in the areas of fire prevention and suppression, operation of fire equipment, department operations and emergency medical care
·   – Establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and the public
·   – Demonstrate effective written and oral communications
·   – Maintain adequate physical fitness
·   – Perform professionally in a non-traditional work schedule that includes nights, weekends, and holidays
REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
–   – High school diploma or GED
–   – Completion of at least 21 semester units of college coursework
–   – California Class C Driver License and satisfactory driving record
–   – Completion of CA State Board of Fire Services Firefighter I curriculum (Academy Graduate) [1-year as a paid firefighter will be accepted in lieu of completion of the Firefighter I curriculum]
–   – EMT-P Certification
–   – Valid CPAT card dated on or after April 9, 2016
–   – Must possess a valid California Paramedic License with the ability to become accredited by the Marin County Emergency Medical Services Agency at the time of appointment
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 
While performing this job, the employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms and climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

STATION VISITS:
It is recommended that candidates schedule a Station Visit by contacting the San Rafael Fire Department directly at (415) 485-3304. The City is tentatively planning an orientation session for interested candidates to learn more about the City of San Rafael Fire Department.  The orientation is intended to cover preparation for the oral board process and what the department is looking for in a candidate.  Attendees will also have the opportunity to learn about the City of San Rafael in general and the issues facing fire service today.  Candidates will be notified of the date and time for this orientation via e-mail.
TESTING and SELECTION PROCESS:
The examination for this recruitment will consist of the following: application appraisal, oral board interview examination and/or performance examination, a Fire Chief’s interview, background check, fingerprint clearance, psychological exam, and a pre-placement physical examination, including a drug screen.
After review of the applications and supporting documents, qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the Oral Board process tentatively scheduled for the week of October 24, 2016.
Candidates who pass the Oral Board will be placed on an Eligibility List which is valid for up to 12 months.  Appointments for this entry-level position are subject to the Rule of the List and consideration for employment is given regardless of ranking.
