 Position Summary

Performs considerably difficult work in the performance of skilled emergency medical services, fire suppression, and fire prevention duties. Maintains and cares for all medical/fire vehicles and various other equipment used by Page Fire Department

Essential Job Function:

  • Performs inspections of assigned vehicles and equipment at required intervals and after all incident responses.
  • Provides emergency medical services and fire suppression services.
  • Participates in laying hose lines, directing water and pressure streams, placing ladders, ventilating buildings, rescuing persons, placing salvage covers and performing clean-up operations.
  • Participates in fire prevention inspections and pre-planning.
  • Operates and drives all necessary equipment required for the performance of EMS and fire suppression work.
  • Interprets and understands DOT Emergency Response Guidebook and NFPA Hazardous Materials Handbook.
  • Participates in the cleaning and minor maintenance of quarters, equipment and apparatus and determines the need for maintenance and repairs.
  • Counsels and guides reserve and volunteer firefighters while promoting an atmosphere conducive to harmony and productivity.
  • Assists with or conducts drills and instructs classes in all facets of emergency activities including EMS, fire suppression, fire pre-suppression, hydraulics, fire pump operations, and all other related activities when requested to do so.
  •  Manages and maintains medical supplies.
  • Assists and serves as Lead instructor for ARFF training as needed.
  • Maintain all ARFF records,
  • Assists in the supervision of firefighters as needed.
  • Coordinates Fire Fighting Academy to all new hires, along with instruction.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Valid OHIO State Driver’s License : Yes

Ability to Read/Speak English : Yes

College : Not required

Academy Certification : Within 1 year of hire

Prior Experience : Preferred

Necessary Certifications :

  • Must obtain and maintain State of Ohio Fire Fighter Level 1 & 2 Certification within one year of service.
  • Must obtain and maintain EMT basic within one year of service.
  • All employees hired are required to obtain Paramedic Certification within three years of completion of his/her probationary period, as a condition of employment. The City pays for paramedic training for those who are not a paramedic upon hire.

High School Grad/GED : Yes

Valid ARIZONA State Driver’s License : Yes

Academy Certification :

  • Fire Fighting, I & II Certification.
  • National EMS Certification (BLS or ALS)
  • State of Arizona certification as an emergency medical technician or higher must be maintained.

Prior Experience :

  • Five (5) years in the fire service with the completion of fire hydraulics and engineering class or an equivalent hydraulics/engineering class; minimum of two (2) years of experience in the field of fire suppression;
  • One (1) year of engineering experience;
  • One (1) year of EMS experience at the EMT, IEMT, or CEP Level and possess a minimum of at least an ADHS EMT certification.

Special Requirements :

  • Completion of the Arizona Fire Fighter I & II requirements or a similar course as approved by the Fire Chief. Completion of the ADHS Hazardous Materials First Responder course is mandatory prior to employment or be able to obtain within 6 months of being hired.
  • Will be required to pass a physical evaluation and agility test related to job duties.
  • Employee will be subjected to on-call assignments, shift supervisor assignments, and special projects as needed.
  • Employee will be required to maintain hair within the allowances stated in NFPA and Fire Department Guidelines. As employee will be a uniformed representative of the City of Page, the employee must maintain a neat and clean appearance.
  • Employee will be required to notify the Fire Chief of all outside jobs (paid or volunteer) and will be required to provide the Fire Chief with outside job work schedules. Fire Department operations may preclude employment in certain jobs that create conflict with the mission of the Fire Department or interfere with call back availability.
  • Due to the essential and critical nature of this position, when off duty the employee shall provide a valid home or cell contact phone number to the Fire Chief or his designate.
  • All employees are subject to emergency call back. Upon notification by the Fire Chief or his designate, the employee shall be able to respond to the fire station after being notified of the emergency.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :

  • Knowledge of fire suppression and fire department vehicles, medical control and public relations. Must be able to function as operator/driver of various types of fire engines.
  • Knowledge of regulatory issues related to emergency situations and public and employee safety.
  • Knowledge of atmospheric and gas detectors, various hand-held measuring devices and investigative equipment.
  • Skill in the use computer equipment for word processing, spread sheet and data functions.
  • Skill in the use of basic office equipment such as copier, calculator and FAX machine.
  • Ability to possess and maintain either an Arizona EMT, IEMT or CEP certification.
  • Ability to develop reports and correspondence in a small network computer environment.
  • Ability to exhibit excellent verbal and written communication skills in business English.
  • Ability to operate two-way radio equipment required.
  • Ability to demonstrate telephone communication skills must be excellent.
  • Ability to speak in public before groups of various sizes and ages is desirable.
  • Ability to develop and maintain excellent working relationships with various federal, state and local agencies in the fields of emergency services, enforcement and community development.
  • Ability to work effectively in team-oriented approach to community problems and development issues with other City Departments and personnel.
  • Ability to use various EMS and fire service related tools and equipment and safety devices such as extrication equipment, various power saws and rescue equipment, cardiac monitors, protective clothing, body substance isolation techniques, etc.
  • Ability to operate standard passenger vehicles, light trucks, four-wheel drive vehicles, fire trucks of various sizes including specialty vehicles such as aerial apparatus, ARFF trucks and ambulances. Must be able to function as Driver/Operator of various fire engines.
  • Ability to operate basic hand tools, forcible entry devices, extrication equipment, generators, lighting equipment, ventilation equipment and specialized rescue devices.
  • Ability to use various equipment and safety devices such as monitors, SCBA, protective clothing, etc. in the handling of emergency situations.
  • Ability to use suction devices, oxygen saturation monitor, blood glucose monitor, KED device, back board, traction splint, MAST pants, EVAC splints and pediatric securing devices.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The following physical abilities are required: balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, fingering, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, and talking, visual acuity and walking.

The work requires decision making that could lead to major community or organizational consequences if this position fails to make the appropriate decision at the time.
