THE POSITION

King County Emergency Medical Services / Medic One are seeking applicants to enter a 10 to 12 month training program to become certified as King County Paramedics. Paramedic certification is granted upon the successful completion of the University of Washington / Harborview Medical Center / Seattle Fire Department Paramedic Training Program. Paramedic training includes: lectures, medical labs, medical/surgical rounds, emergency room and ICU/CCU experience, and riding on the Seattle Fire Department paramedic units.

APPLICATION PROCESS:

Applicants must apply online with Public Health AND Public Safety Testing (PST). You will be required to submit applications with both agencies. For more information about the written exams and to apply online with PST, please visit their website at: http://www.publicsafetytesting.com

PST will conduct a general knowledge exam and a basic EMT exam, which is based on National DOT standards. The written exams must be taken no later than March 31, 2017 in order for you to participate in this year’s testing process. The most competitive applicants will be determined based on the written exam scores, and then invited to participate in the skills assessment center currently scheduled for Saturday April 29 OR Sunday April 30, physical ability test on Monday, May 1st  OR Tuesday, May 2nd, and the Oral Board interviews on Wednesday, May 3rd or Thursday, May 4th. Applicants invited to the skills assessment center will need to provide copies of their current EMT or Paramedic Cert and Driver License in order to participate.

EXAMINATION PROCESS:

Applicants who meet the posted minimum qualifications will complete their written examinations with PST. The most competitive candidates will then move on to the skills assessment center. The most competitive candidates from the skills assessment center will be invited to an oral board, and complete a fitness evaluation. Finalists will be asked to a final oral board with Paramedic Training.

Applicants who have completed and passed all parts of the examination process will be placed on an eligibility list. This list will remain in effect for one year or until a new examination is conducted and a list created.

The selected finalists will be required to pass a psychological fitness evaluation and a comprehensive physical examination, which includes an x-ray of the lower back, and a drug screening. Criminal, driving, and employment background checks will be conducted and finalists must pass prior to starting the Paramedic Training Program.

Candidates applying with Public Health will need to respond to the supplemental question listed on the job posting. All work history will be verified. Any applicant that provides false information will automatically be disqualified from the process.

While in training, participate as a response team to predetermined types of emergencies requiring paramedic services, including structure fires and hazardous materials (HazMat) incidents, mass casualty incidents (MCI) and weapons of mass destruction (WMD) events; provide appropriate ALS care to patients in unusual environments such as low-angle and vehicle extrication rescue incidents; determine and provide, within the context of patient care guidelines and physician oversight, the most appropriate treatment for patients out of the hospital, including appropriate mode of patient transport and destination.

While in training, communicate with patient and/or family regarding medical condition; transport patient in an emergency vehicle and deliver patient to appropriate medical facility.

While in training, perform key shift change activities and discuss pertinent issues with Operations Officer (MSO); perform scheduled equipment maintenance and housekeeping duties

While in training, provide input and oversight to Basic Life Support (BLS) crews regarding treatment and transportation options.

While in training, check and report the operational and safety status of equipment and medic vehicle to MSO; participate in safety training as mandated by federal and state law.

While in training, document incidents according to established guidelines, using documents such as Medical Incident Report Forms (MIRF) and appropriate journals; participate in special activities or training as directed by program administrators; and assist with public education and injury prevention efforts.

QUALIFICATIONS

Three years of field experience as an EMT or Paramedic in a urban or rural pre-hospital Emergency Medical Services setting, one year of which must be consecutive experience with a single agency. If you do not have at least three years of experience you do not qualify to participate in the testing process. No exceptions will be made.

Current certification as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic.

Demonstrated knowledge of emergency medical care.

Demonstrated skill in communicating clearly orally and in writing.

Demonstrated skill in accurately recalling information and events associated with emergency services.

Demonstrated skill in calmly communicating with patients and family members who are under duress.

Demonstrated ability to perform emergency assessments and emergency treatments.

Demonstrated ability to make decisions during emergencies and interact effectively with others.

Demonstrated ability to work under stressful conditions.
