SELECTION PROCESS:       Written Examination

 THE POSITION

A Firefighter Trainee attends a City-sponsored 16-week Firefighter Training Academy and receives fire service training.  Upon successful completion of the academy, trainees are eligible for immediate appointment to the position of Firefighter (current base salary: $7,833 – $9,491/per month).

  • High school diploma or equivalent

EXPERIENCE:

  • None

LICENSE/CERTIFICATES:

  • A valid California Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one by the date of hire; AND
  • Proof of current and valid Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT), or Paramedic certification from a California Local Emergency Medical Services Agency; OR current and valid National Registry EMT, EMT-II or Paramedic certification.
  • Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) with a test date after February 1, 2016.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Be 18 years of age or older; AND
  • Be in good physical health, and possess the appropriate physical strengths and abilities to do the work; AND
  • Have vision of at least 20/100 in each eye, correctable to 20/30, and normal color vision; AND
  • Have proof of U.S. Citizenship or authorization to work in the United States.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:
FIREFIGHTER TRAINEE RECRUITMENT AND EXAMINATION PROCESS

1.  Each candidate must apply in person, and will receive and must complete a modified City of Richmond Employment Application Form which certifies that he/she meets the minimum qualifications.  We will accept all valid modified applications that are submitted on the filing date. We will only accept the modified employment application. We will not accept additional documents.

You MUST bring:

  • A valid California Driver’s License (CDL).  A military identification card, a United States Passport or valid identification issued from another state will be accepted in lieu of CDL; however, candidates must have a valid CDL prior to appointment. If you have a temporary license, you must bring an additional form of picture identification such as a passport, California Identification Card or another state-issued identification card.
  • Proof of current and valid Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT), or Paramedic certification from a California Local Emergency Medical Services Agency; OR current and valid National Registry EMT, EMT-II or Paramedic certification.
  • A valid Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) card with a test date after February 1, 2016.

  • Applications will only be issued and accepted on Saturday, May 13, 2017, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
  • Application materials will not be mailed to candidates.
  • Applications will not be accepted from candidates who do not apply in person and who fail to bring all of the required documentation.

2.  Candidates who apply on May 13, 2017 and meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to a written test.  The written test will measure a broad range of skills and abilities important for job success.  These abilities may include the ability to: understand oral and written information; perform mathematical calculations; and read and understand maps, diagrams and mechanical drawings. (Weighted 100%)  Candidates will receive additional information regarding the written test when they submit their modified application.

Candidates will be notified by e-mail after May 13, 2017 of the date and time that they have been scheduled for the written test

3.  Candidates who receive a passing score on the written test will be placed on an employment list.

4.  Candidates’ rank on the employment list will be determined by the score they receive on the written test. Candidates must achieve an “A” (Best Qualified), “B” (Well Qualified) or “C” (Qualified) rating to be placed on the employment list.  The employment list will be in effect for two (2) years; however, the list can be canceled without notice after six (6) months.

5.  The applications for the candidates who are reachable on the employment list will be submitted to the Fire Department for further consideration. Placement on the employment list does not guarantee that you will be selected to continue in the selection process.

6.  The Fire Department will review applications and select the better-qualified candidates for department-level interviews.

7.  After department interviews, a select number of candidates will begin the background investigation process.

8.  Better-qualified candidates will be given a conditional offer of employment and will be scheduled for a medical evaluation and psychological assessment.

9.  Candidates who successfully pass the medical evaluation and psychological assessment may meet with the Fire Chief for an interview.  The Fire Chief will make the final hiring decision.

10.  Candidates who are selected for hire will receive an offer letter from the Human Resources Management Department.

Immigration Reform Control Act:  To comply with the Immigration Reform Control Act of 1986, all new employees will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship or authorization to work in the United Sates on their first day of employment.
