Port Jefferson
The Port Jefferson Volunteer Fire Department Ambulance Company was founded in 1959 by 15 firemen with one ambulance. Our first ambulance was donated by St. Charles Hospital. It was a 1939/1940 Chevy ambulance. At that time we provided emergency care to all the residents living in the area from as far east as Wading River to as far west as Stony Brook to as far south as Medford. In 1978 the corps became one of the first Advanced Life Support ambulance corps on Long Island. This allowed the corps to deliver the highest level of pre-hospital patient care available. Currently, Port Jefferson Ambulance consists of over 100 members, serving a constituency of 26,000 people in the areas of Port Jefferson, Mount Sinai, and Belle Terre.
