My name is David Dumais, and I am the Fire Chief for the City of Torrance. I am honored and humbled to have the opportunity to serve the City of Torrance as your Fire Chief.
The Torrance Fire Department is a nationally recognized ISO Class 1 premier all-risk public safety organization. Our primary mission is to protect, serve and improve the quality of life for the entire community of Torrance. We achieve this through strong partnerships in all areas within the City of Torrance.
Our resources are strategically located across the City to ensure we are meeting the community’s expectations. Our emergency response resources include seven engine companies, two truck companies, five paramedic rescue units, hazardous materials unit, Urban Search & Rescue, a multi-casualty unit, an air & light unit, and a Platoon Commander serving as emergency scene manager.

Qualifications
Age: Must be 21 years of age.
Smoking: Must be a non-smoker; smoking on/off duty is prohibited.
EMT: Candidates must possess a current CA EMT-1 certification.
Education: Equivalent to graduation from high school supplemented by college level coursework
and/or specialized training in fire science.
Completion of a State of California Fire Academy or possession of a California Fire Fighter-1
Certification. Industrial, wildland or military fire-fighting experience is highly desirable.
License: Valid driver’s license. Must obtain a Firefighter Restricted Class C License prior to the
completion of probation.
Medical: Must meet NFPA Standard 1582, “Medical Requirements for Firefighters”.

The City of Torrance Fire Department Auxiliary Fire Fighter program provides Fire Academy graduates with an opportunity to apply their acquired skills and gain insight, while preparing for a fire service career. Auxiliary Fire Fighters respond to
emergencies, assist with Fire prevention inspections, and maintain apparatus, equipment and stations.
Qualifications
The Minimum Requirements to become a Fire Auxiliary are:
Graduation from a California State Certified Fire Academy
California Emergency Medical Technician-1 Certification
A valid CA Drivers License
Current CPAT or Biddle Certification prior to start date.
Ambulance Operators operate city owned ambulances and provide patient transport services to and from medical emergencies as part of the ambulance transportation team. This position performs appropriate field procedures utilizing EMT-1 level skills such as attaining and documenting vital signs, bandaging, splinting, lifting patients into an ambulance and assisting firefighter/paramedics.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
Any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way of obtaining the necessary knowledge and abilities is:
Equivalent to the completion of high school supplemented by college-level coursework and/or specialized training in fire science.
Completion of a State of California Fire Academy is preferred.
Experience as a Fire Explorer, Auxiliary Firefighter, and/or Fire Cadet in the Torrance Fire Department is highly desirable.
Licenses and Certifications
Possess and maintain a California Class C driver’s license and an Ambulance Driver certificate from the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
Possess and maintain a current Emergency Medical Technician-1 (EMT-1) certificate from Los Angeles County*.
Possess and maintain a valid Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certificate.
*Note: Currently, the County will allow any California accredited EMT to work in Los Angeles.
