The Firefighter Exam

It’s Test Time

School’s out and fire departments are testing – the only thing standing between you and a job as a Firefighter is applying and participating in the recruitment. A multi test process, usually a written test, physical agility or CPAT, Oral Interview, polygraph, background, medical, Chiefs oral and other steps to which the fire department will establish an eligibility list and hire firefighters usually by ranking..

What to Expect on the Written Portion of the Exam

The test measures reading comprehension, mathematics skills, spatial relations, mechanical aptitude, following directions and other GED level knowledge. You do not need a college degree to do well on this portion, but it is essential that you study. Find a study guide online and consider one of Chief Lepore’s books ( Smoke Your Firefighter Interview , Smoke Your Firefighter Written Exam , The Aspiring Firefighter’s 2 Year Plan .) When taking the written test make sure you read the questions carefully and use your time efficiently as the test is timed. Also when answering questions that are mostly agree or mostly dis-agree answer from your heart. These questions are not trick questions however, they have dis-qualifiers (questions) that will result in a failing grade if you don’t answer them with your true fillings.
