Take on a New Challenge with Jobs: Firefighter

Can you think of many careers more rewarding than jobs firefighter-style? While you may never have considered the fire service as a calling, if you’re in the market for a new challenge, manning a hose could be the one for you.

In the US, the ranking of a fire fighter is denoted on their helmet. More experienced team members usually wear white helmets, with juniors in red, although colors can vary from region to region. The helmet also features a different number of megaphones, or bugles, dependent on the owner’s currently held rank.

The chain of command in US fire departments looks a little like this:

  • Firefighter – the entry level rank
  • Engineer/Sargent – Driver
  • Lieutenant – one bugle is worn on the uniform
  • Captain – two bugles
  • Battalion Chief – Two crossed bugles
  • Division Chief/Commissioner – three bugles
  • Deputy Chief/Commissioner – four bugles
  • Assistant Chief – four bugles
  • Chief/Commissioner – five bugles
  • (Note: the bugles are actually speaking trumpets)
