How to Become a Firefighter

Don’t Be a Statistic

To become a firefighter, you need to be strong. Not just physically, but also emotionally and mentally. Competition for jobs is fierce. The physical exam is strenuous and the written exam challenging. Many fail in the process – up to 70%. Those who stick with it go on to have a rewarding career. Before you make the decision to embark on the journey, it is important to know these five steps to becoming a firefighter.

5 Steps

First, become an EMT (Emergency Medical Technician.) EMT training is essential and almost always required as a prerequisite to apply with most fire departments. Classes are offered during the day and in the evenings. There are different levels to EMT training, so make sure the EMT class you take offers “National Registry” testing as an option. The National Registry will be accepted more universally, and across State lines even.

Second, be sure to understand the hiring process for the department you are applying. All fire departments have different hiring processes and different training that they require. Make sure you meet all of their requirements before submitting an application.

Third, you should explore the option of taking firefighting technology classes at a local college. These classes will give you important theoretical knowledge, and many fire departments like the in-class hours. Even better the Firefighter 1 program will be huge when applying for a firefighter’s position.

Fourth, volunteer with local fire companies and volunteer firefighting groups. This experience is invaluable and shows your commitment to the vocation.

Finally, be in shape, both mentally and physically. If you cannot pass the physical or written exam, then your volunteer work and EMT training will not matter. Train on your own or join a gym. Do your research to determine exactly what the physical exam entails; this ensures your preparedness.
