Position Details

  • Compensation: Starting salary $37,044/year, may be negotiable based on qualifications and experience.

Powhatan County is accepting resumes from qualified applicants for the County’s Firefighter/EMT positions.  This is a full time, benefit eligible position, and has an excellent benefit package including participation in the Virginia Retirement System, vacation, and sick leave, group life insurance, and medical insurance. Positions will work a 12-hour rotating shift during weekdays, with an annual salary of $37,044.

This position performs professional protective work providing firefighting services, in addition to emergency and non-emergency medical services.

Candidates shall be able to drive and operate various types of fire and rescue equipment, respond to fire and medical emergencies, and provide appropriate care to patients.

A thorough knowledge of fire, rescue, hazardous materials and emergency service delivery is required.  Must possess the ability to act quickly and appropriately in all hazardous situations.

Certification as Firefighter II (NFPA 1001), EMT-Basic; Hazardous Materials Operations and NIMS IS-100, IS-200, IS-700 and IS-800 is required.

Must be at least 21 years of age on first day of employment; pass a criminal records check; pass a driving history check; pass a pre-employment physical exam; cannot serve as an active operational  member of any volunteer Fire or EMS agency within the County of Powhatan; may have to work beyond work schedule with little or no notice; must maintain EMT-Basic certification and valid driver’s license for duration of employment.
