Wildland Fire Suppression Specialist (Astoria) description imageThe Oregon Department of Forestry hires seasonal wildland firefighting positions each year. These positions generally work from June through September; however, the duration of the season and job conditions vary by location. Not all locations have vacancies each year. This recruitment will be used to fill seasonal Wildland Fire Suppression Specialist positions as they occur in the Astoria District. Interviews are expected to be completed by May; however, application reviews may begin at any time. For best consideration, apply as soon as possible.

Wildland Fire Suppression Specialist (Astoria) description imageThe statewide Protection From Fire Program’s main purpose is to protect 15.8 million acres (24,900 square miles) of private and public forestland from fire. The acreage protected includes 3.5 million acres of ´wildland-urban interface´, which are forest lands with residences and other structures within the reach of wildfire in that area. This is done through a complete and coordinated system of fire prevention, suppression and fuels management.

Duties & Responsibilities
Duties include, but may not be limited to:

  • Responsible for wildland fire suppression as a member of a crew, engine or dozer.
  • May direct crews in wildland fire suppression, pre-suppression, fire prevention and safety activities.
  • Constructs fire line using hand tools or power equipment. Participates in mop-up duties, operate and monitor firefighting vehicles in support of wildfire suppression.
  • Assists with the implementation of local fire prevention programs and public outreach in an assigned unit.
  • Participates in safety meetings, develops and participates in fire training, both formal and experience based coaching, for cooperators, landowners and fire crews.
  • Locates fires using maps, Global Positioning System (GPS), and compass.
  • Operates department vehicles including but not limited to cars, trucks, forklifts, cache vans, All Terrain Vehicle’s (ATV’s), and fire engines.
  • Performs maintenance on fire equipment, buildings and grounds.
  • Completes detailed documents.
  • Maintains regular contact with forest operators, landowners and the public involving explanation or interpretation of forest laws and fire programs.
  • Builds and maintains positive working relationships with cooperators, landowners, and the public.

Because the Department’s highest priority work is a forest fire emergency, this position will be utilized during those emergencies to provide assistance in a variety of ways. That assistance may be directly aiding the emergency effort in the field or at the Salem headquarters. It also may be in providing backup to fill in for another position that is being used in direct aid to the emergency, or it may be in performing an essential function in some capacity either within this Program or elsewhere in Salem or in the field.

Working Conditions:

These positions require a valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.  Employee is expected to work in a safe and efficient manner, including reporting to work for scheduled shift with all personal protective equipment (PPE). Some positions may require driving wildland fire engines obeying all traffic laws and driving on steep narrow forest roads. Required to work various shifts including holidays, nights, weekends, and long hours on short notice. Assignments to emergency incidents may require employee to be away from duty station for up to 21 days. Occasionally required to work under adverse conditions such as noise, smoke, heat, rough terrain, dust, inclement weather and exposure to poison oak, bees and poisonous snakes. Requires occasional exposure to heavy equipment operations, aircraft, hazards of burning and/or falling material, and chemical and biological pesticides.

Qualifications, Required & Requested Skills

Minimum Qualifications:

Two (2) years of Wildland firefighting experience. (One 3-6 month season is equivalent to one (1) year of experience).Must be at least 18 years of age by time of hire.

THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA APPLIES TO THE WILDLAND FIRE SUPPRESSION SPECIALIST:

  • May be required to obtain the Class C or higher Warden certification within the trial service period.
  • Preference may be given to candidates who have current fire qualifications. You must submit your current wildland fire incident qualification card, or equivalent with your application materials to provide proof of your qualifications.  Attach this document to the ‘Attachments’ section of your job application.

This position requires the operation of a State vehicle for the purpose of conducting official State business. An Oregon driving record check will be conducted on the top applicants to ensure a valid license and acceptable driving record.  If your license is from outside Oregon, you must submit at least a three year court/DMV printout at the time of interview.

An unacceptable driving record includes:

  • Conviction of a major traffic offense within the previous 24 months which includes reckless driving, driving under the influence, failing to perform the duties of a driver, criminal driving while suspended or revoked, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, felony hit and run, etc.;
  • Felony revocation of driving privileges or felony or misdemeanor   license suspension within the previous 24 months;
  • More than 3 moving traffic violations in the previous 12 months;
  • A careless driving conviction in the previous 12 months;
  • A Class A moving traffic violation in the previous 12 months
