Becoming a firefighter for the City of Raleigh is a highly competitive process. The Training Division typically receives over one thousand applications for each recruit academy, from men and women of many backgrounds. As a result, the Raleigh Fire Department is a true melting pot of people from across North Carolina and the United States.

All applicants are strongly encouraged to download and read the Candidate Selection Procedures Manual.

The starting salary for a firefighter in FY14 is $32,673.73 with a 3% raise upon graduation from the Raleigh Fire Academy.

Recruitment Process

The Raleigh Fire Department will be accepting applications for the 42nd academy September 12, 2016 until midnight, October 7, 2016. All interested candidates must go to the City of Raleigh’s website under Employment to sign in and complete an application.

How to Become a Raleigh Firefighter

On July 1, 2014, the City of Raleigh implemented a new on-line application process. Applications are no longer accepted in person and must be completed online.

All applicants must go to the City of Raleigh website and create a governmentjobs.com account. If you already have a GovernmentJobs.com account, sign in with your username and password, select the job title and then apply. All sections of the application must be completed. If a question does not apply to you, indicate with NA. Questions marked with an asterisk (*) are required.

Fire Recruitment Process

Recruits lined upAll new recruits complete a recruit academy (about 27 weeks) conducted at the Keeter Training Center which includes both intense physical training and a challenging academic program. Required to maintain an minimum 80% average, recruits receive several certifications before graduation and their assignment to a fire station (EMT, Firefighter I and II, Haz-Mat Operations Plus)
