To protect life and property by performing fire fighting, emergency medical aid, hazardous materials and fire prevention duties. Maintains fire equipment, apparatus and facilities, and other duties as required. Works under the close supervision of a Station Commander and/or company officer.
 Essential Duties:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONISBILITIES:
Performs fire fighting activities including driving fire apparatus and ambulances, operating pumps and related equipment, laying hose and performing fire combat, containment, ventilation and extinguishment tasks.
Performs emergency medical aid and rescue activities including administering first aid, operating EMS equipment such as monitor/defibrillator, portable suction units, etc., performing extrication and providing other assistance as required.
Maintain and foster an environment, which facilitates the Exceeding Expectations (professional, responsive, leaders) philosophy of the City.
Responds to emergencies in an effective and efficient manner.
·         Drives various apparatus and ambulances to the scene of call.
·         Places equipment in most appropriate position.
·         Lays and connects hose in the proper manner.
·         Operates apparatus to provide most effective use of available water supply.
Approach origin of fire, being conscious of tactical priorities and the ability to facilitate fire control measures.
·         Reacts to rescue operations first, fire control procedures second, and property conservation third.
·         Applies appropriate quenching streams/agent to the source of fire.
·         Selects the most suitable places to apply ventilation techniques.
·         Raises/lowers ground ladders.
Anticipates fire behavior characteristics in order to minimize the threat to life and property.
·         Understands the basic components of burning.
·         Recognizes the dangers associated with flashover and flame spread.
·         Selects appropriate class of extinguisher to stop burning.
Performs numerous and varied tasks individually or in unison with other firefighters.
·         Performs assigned duties in maintaining apparatus, equipment, building, quarters and grounds.
·         Employs proper procedure for use, inspection, care and maintenance of Fire Department equipment.
·         Operates equipment in an efficient and safe manner.
Responds to Emergency Medical Service (EMS) calls for first aid and assistance, performs rescue and patient care as required.
·         Determines nature and extent of injury/illness. Establishes priority for required emergency care.
·         Assists in the removal of persons from life threatening situations. Utilizes manual and powered rescue equipment to extricate persons trapped. Utilizes prescribed techniques to remove victim(s) to safety.
·         Provides medical treatment in accordance with the protocols established by the City’s Medical Director.
Maintains and expands knowledge and skills in the areas of fire suppression, hazardous materials mitigation, EMS and fire prevention.
·         Participates in department sponsored simulated and classroom training.
·         Attends required fire service courses at accredited schools.
·         Attends fire service/EMS programs to continue his/her education.
Assists in public safety programs that are oriented to EMS, fire prevention, education and public relations.
 ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Operates equipment including hand tools, emergency medical equipment, power tools, light and heavy equipment and operates fire apparatus. Must be able to multiply, divide, use fractions and read graphs (fire pump operations). Must be able to read textbooks. Must be able to interpret instructions and use logic to solve problems.
Paid, on-call; carries a pager, responds to emergency calls as required by department policy all hours other than their normal working hours.
Two years initial training and continuous training thereafter.
Must have demonstrated ability and knowledge to perform various fire suppression techniques and operate fire service equipment. Maintain firefighter skill levels.
Must successfully pass periodic cardiovascular fitness evaluation, respiratory function test and physical ability evaluation as prescribed by Fire Department standards.
Must have active participation in Fire Department/EMS activities.
Demonstrate successful completion of required fire service and emergency medical service (EMS) training as prescribed by Fire Department policy.
Must have satisfactory results of employee evaluation.
Must have successful completion of two (2) year probation period. Probation period may be extended if training is not completed as scheduled/required.
Must complete the following required training courses within established time period (2 years total):
Firefighter I
Firefighter II
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
      Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (National Register)
      Hazardous Material Response: Operations Level
Firefighters hired prior to 01-01-96 must maintain or upgrade their current EMS training levels
Be able to read and understand correspondence, memoranda and materials.
Must be able to effectively represent the organization, department, and administrative operations to management and the public.
Must have ability to facilitate effective presentations at public meetings.
Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills.
Ability to make accurate arithmetic computations and prepare and analyze complex financial reports.
Skill in the use and care of calculator, personal computers, printers, and other office equipment, and working knowledge of computer software.
Must have the ability to accept criticism and/or discipline; must have tact and diplomacy; must be fair and unbiased; must strive to promote a cooperative atmosphere in the department; must have positive attitude.
Must have commitment to the organization, willingness to take initiative, dependability, maturity in relationships with others, and self-confidence.

Must be able to perform all essential position functions under the working conditions as described.
Ability to work evenings and weekends. Ability to serve “on call” duty assignments.
Ability to operate a motor vehicle and have a valid Minnesota State Drivers License.
 Qualifications:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or GED.
18 years of age or older on appointment date.
Must successfully pass City administered initial and periodic physical agility test, physical examination, stress test, drug screen, pulmonary function test, and psychological evaluation.
Must possess valid Minnesota drivers license and be insurable.
Ability to regularly respond to emergency calls within established departmental time periods.
Must maintain a four (4) minute travel time to a Woodbury Fire Department station. Exceptions to this rule may be made by the Fire Chief for reasons that the Fire Chief may deem necessary.
Ability to complete the following required training courses within established time period (2 years total):
      Firefighter I
      Firefighter II
      Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
            Emergency Medical Technician-Basic
            Hazardous Material Response: Operations Level
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Successful completion of State of Minnesota Firefighter I course from a technical or community college.
State of Minnesota Firefighter II Certification.
Medical training, e.g. First Responder, Emergency Medical Technician, etc.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
 
Vision:                    Normal vision needed with or without correction. Specific vision abilities
required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision,
peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
Hearing:          Normal hearing needed. Firefighter must discriminate among similar
sounds in environments with a great amount of background noise.
Speech:          Must be able to communicate effectively.
Lifting:            The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 60 pounds and occasionally
lift and/or move up to 165 pounds.
Carrying:         Must be able to carry and/or move a 43 pound apartment pack up two flights of
stairs.
Swinging:        Must be able to swing a sledge hammer for a minimum of
25 repititions.
Drag:               Must be able to drag an object weighing 175 pounds or more.
Walking/
Mobility:         Must be able to walk or crawl while carrying or lifting. Must be able to ascend and
descend stairs or ladders. Must be able to balance and have the ability to steady
oneself and keep from falling. Must be capable of reaching (extend the hands or
arms in any direction); capable of utilizing both gross and fine muscle functions for
the handling (seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with the
hands); fingering (picking, pinching, or otherwise working with the fingers); and
feeling (perceiving attributes of objects such as size, shape, temperature, or texture
by means of receptors in skin, particularly those of the fingertips). Must be capable
of applying a leg lock with either leg upon a ground ladder to provide a safe anchor
when operating hose lines or performing rescue work. All lifting, dragging and/or
walking/mobility requirements are to be met while in full protective gear, which
weighs approximately 60 pounds.
Pulling:            Must be able to pull a 25# hose from ground to 2nd story and return to ground
level.  This needs to be a hand over hand pull without using any bars or leverage
devices to help as a pulley.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places or confined spaces, and is occasionally exposed to bloodborne pathogens, wet and or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock and vibration.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, except during certain fire fighting or EMT activities when noise levels may be loud.
