Position Description and Requirements

General Firefighter work in controlling, extinguishing, and preventing fires and extensive medical service work.

Applicants applying for a Firefighter/EMT or a Fire Medic position must meet the following requirements:

  • Possession of a current State of Florida Firefighter Certification and a current State of Florida Emergency Medical Technician Certification or Paramedic Certification (Fire Medics)
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • No record of a conviction of a felony or a conviction of a misdemeanor involving moral turpitude
  • Able to meet and maintain departmental requirements of health, physical and mental condition
  • Individuals hired as Firefighter/EMT or Fire Medics are required to establish and/or maintain a bona fide residence in Pinellas, Hillsborough, Pasco, Hernando or Manatee County.
  • Applicants must not have used any form of tobacco products for one year prior to the date of State of Florida Firefighter certification.

Physical Ability Test/Fire Team Testing

The Physical Ability Test is a series of tasks representing what firefighters do while performing in the line of duty. It is designed to give the fire department a valid method of testing the future firefighter’s potential.

The City of Clearwater Fire & Rescue Department offers full testing services for the position of Firefighter/EMT and Fire Medic through National Testing Network, Inc.  To fill out an application and schedule a test, go to www.nationaltestingnetwork.com, select Fire and sign up for the Clearwater Fire & Rescue Department.
What to expect at the NTN website:

  • Completion of the application process
  • Review all information related to the Clearwater Fire & Rescue Department Firefighter/EMT and Fire Medic position, including minimum requirements, salary and benefits.
  • Detailed information about the testing process for both the entry level test and CPAT testing.
  • Opportunity to take online practice tests at www.fireteamtest.com.
  • Schedule your own convenient test time. Tests are offered multiple times a week, including Saturdays.
  • Take high quality job simulation tests in a standardized, fair testing environment.

Upon completion of the entry level exam and CPAT testing, all candidate scores are automatically forwarded to the Clearwater Fire & Rescue Department.  Candidates who complete the entry level exam and pass the physical abilities test will be placed on the department’s eligibility list. When hiring, the Clearwater Fire & Rescue Department will review all qualified applications and contact select candidates on the list and invite them to participate in other stages of the department selection process.

National Testing Network is a service provided to conduct entry level testing and CPAT testing in a standardized, professional environment. National Testing Network does not replace the Clearwater Fire & Rescue Department’s responsibility and decision making in the testing process.  All candidate results are provided to the Clearwater Fire & Rescue Department where the final decisions are made.

Salary and Benefits

Starting salary for a Firefighter/EMT effective October 1st, 2014, is $38,039 and for a Firefighter/Fire Medic is $45,646 annually with periodic increases, pension program with twenty-year retirement, group life and hospitalization insurance, two weeks of paid vacation after one year of continuous service, paid sick leave, nine paid holidays/year, 53 hour work week, and uniforms and equipment are furnished.
