JOB TITLE: Firefighter

JOB SALARY: $35,409.35- $55,238.59

The Position: The position performs technical duties in the suppression of fire and in response to medical emergencies, natural disasters, and other emergency situations.

To Compete in the Selection Process: Before your application can be considered, you must successfully achieve the minimum score outlined in our pre-employment assessments.   Candidates will be tested utilizing “WorkKeys Skill Assessments”.  Candidates wishing to move forward in our application process should pursue testing at a WorkKeys testing center of their choice. In Wilson, the testing process is handled by Wilson Community College (WCC). There is a $50.00 administrative fee made payable to the college for the required assessments. Your application will remain incomplete if you have not submitted your WorkKeys exam results to Human Resources by the application deadline listed above. If results from all four areas noted below are not received by the deadline, you will not move forward in the hiring process.

To take the assessments at Wilson Community College, please contact Corlis McCoy, WorkKeys Administrator, to     reserve a testing slot for a WorkKeys’ LI, RFI, WO, and AM testing session.   Mrs. McCoy’s office is located in Building A, Suite A102h. She can be reached at (252) 246-1341 or via email at cmccoy@wilsoncc.edu from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Thursday. Please see the accompanying letter from Mrs. McCoy outlining testing opportunities.

Applicants must have possession of any diploma or certification equivalent to graduation from high school.               Applicants must possess a valid North Carolina Driver’s License (Class B within one year of employment); must possess current EMT Certification within one year or as classes are offered; must possess the NC Hazardous Materials Technician Level Certification with one year or as classes are offered; must possess the highest level of Firefighter Certification offered by the State of North Carolina at date of hire or upon completion of WF/RS Recruit Academy.

The Selection Process: The process begins with a complete evaluation of the applications submitted. All applicants must complete a City of Wilson application. A resume may be attached, but is not a substitute. Incomplete or unsigned applications will not be processed. After screening all candidates, the most qualified will be invited to participate in a physical test personal interview. The interview will cover the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the duties of the vacant position. The applicant determined to best fit the needs of the position will be given careful       reference and thorough criminal background check, a drug test and any required medical examinations that may be necessary.
