Under general supervision, performs general duty firefighting work in combating fires, extinguishing, and preventing fires and in maintaining fire stations and related equipment.

Performs EMS first responder and other duties as required.

The preferred applicant will be EMT-B certified, state certified Firefighter, state technical rescue certification, and Hazardous Materials Operations Level certified.

Must reside not more than 30 miles commuting distance of the Central Fire Department.Minimum age of 18. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina.

Successful completion of the physical agility test is required. Selected applicants will be notified by the Fire Department after the closing of the application process when the physical agility test is scheduled.

An employee in this position must possess the ability to work 24 hours on and 48 hours off, which includes working on holidays and weekends.

Major Duties
Responds to fires and performs fire suppression activities utilizing firefighting equipment and techniques, including nozzle operation, fire stream direction, and building ventilation.

Performs rescue, salvage, and overhaul operations.

Administers EMT level emergency medical care.

Participates in physical fitness programs.

Inspects assigned apparatus and equipment; performs routine maintenance on same.

Participates and assists in training, fire drills, and mock disasters, including set-up and evacuation.

Assists with vehicle extrication.

Performs building maintenance housekeeping and grounds maintenance duties.

Assists in completing reports.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Qualifications
Applicant must possess a high school diploma or GED.

Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.

Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the National Fire Protection Association, the North Carolina Fire and Rescue Commission, and the North Carolina Office of Medical Services.

Knowledge of firefighting techniques.

Knowledge of firefighting apparatus and equipment.

Knowledge of hydraulics and extrication equipment.

Knowledge of local, state and federal fire codes.

Knowledge of National Fire Protection Association guidelines and departmental and city rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

Knowledge of local geography, streets and buildings.

Knowledge of hazardous materials.

Knowledge of potential fire hazards.

Knowledge of EMT level emergency medical care.

Knowledge of building construction and basic mechanics.

Skill in operating firefighting equipment.

Skill in operating rescue and extrication equipment.

Skill in interpersonal relations.

Skill in oral and written communication.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee in this position to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently/repeatedly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands and exert force; stoop; kneel; half-kneel; squat; crouch; crawl; talk; and hear.  An employee in this position will have successfully passed the Fire “Job Related Performance Ability Test (JRPAT).

SAFETY SENSITIVE: This position has been identified as safety-sensitive. The employee in this position will be part of a random drug testing pool. The methodology for choosing the random test subjects is handled by an outside, impartial, third party vendor.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:  The work is typically performed at the fire station or at fire scenes.  The employee may be exposed to inclement weather, extreme temperatures, smoke, fumes, and hazardous situations and materials that require the use of protective equipment such as masks, goggles, gloves, protective clothing, and self-contained breathing apparatus.
