Fire Chief

POSITION SUMMARY:

Management level position exercising strategic and visionary thinking in development and implementation of fire services critical to the City. Responsible for Fire Marshal’s office, overall fire prevention, fire suppression, organization, staffing, budgeting and service operations and resources for a multi-station Fire Department. Participates as a member of the Management Team.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Selects, supervises, and evaluates assigned staff providing operational guidance and direction to Fire department command staff
  • Establishes departmental policies, procedures and regulations, and ensures proper enforcement to maintain a modern, effective fire department and maximum fire protection to the community
  • Directs department service functions including development and review of long-range plans, technical reports, city ordinance amendment recommendations and firefighting standards and regulations to meet department objectives
  • Monitors, analyzes, prepares budget reporting and financial data for the department
  • Manages the Rental Property Inspection Program, makes field inspections of fire department activities, and evaluates reports and recommendations
  • Confers with public officials and citizen groups to enlist cooperation and explain department policies, procedures, and actions and promotes effective fire community relations
  • Coordinates the development, maintenance and review of mutual fire protection plans and other fire programs with area municipalities, law enforcement agencies, and city departments
  • Assures the department has established and is prepared to implement effective emergency response plans for the City during natural disasters, environmental accidents, property destruction or large-scale emergencies
  • Maintains a working knowledge of federal, state and local laws and develops, recommends, and implements fire policies and procedures in accordance with legal requirements and established standards
  • Serves as a liaison with internal department, external service providers, and with the community
  • Must be able to work the allocated hours of the position and be willing to report for duty on short notice at any hour of the day or night
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in fire science, criminal justice, business management, public administration, or closely related field
  • Seven (7) years paid full-time progressively responsible experience in fire prevention and fire suppression
  • Three (3) years paid full-time supervisory experience

 

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Valid Class C Texas Driver’s License
  • Fire Officer IV Certificate from the Fire Protective Personnel Standards and Education or its equivalent as determined by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection
  • Head of a Fire Department Certificate outlined in Chapter 449 of the Texas Commission on Fire Protection obtained with one year of hire
  • Hazardous Materials Training Certificate
