DEFINITION & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
EMS TESTING:
City of Sierra Vista Fire & Medical Services is conducting open recruitment for the position of EMS Transport (Peak Hours) Crew Member. Interviews are conducted at least once a year.

The next round of interviews is planned for June of 2017.

Testing for the position of EMS Transport Specialist is conducted through the National Testing Network (NTN) and can be scheduled by going to the NTN website and locating the Sierra Vista Fire & Medical Services job posting under the heading for the State of Arizona.

Physical Ability Test (Medic Mile):

Physical ability testing can be scheduled through the NTN. Those candidates invited to interview will be required to present their Medic Mile certificate/verification letter at that time. A valid CPAT (dated no more than 12 months prior to the time of interview) will be accepted in lieu of Medic Mile.
Transportation from Sierra Vista to the NTN Testing Center in Phoenix may be available. Please contact Patti Cluff at (520) 439-2236 prior to scheduling your test for more information.  
Sierra Vista Fire & Medical Services will reimburse NTN testing fees for any candidate selected for employment. 

Under general supervision, performs a variety of emergency medical services (EMS) duties, primarily focused at 911 emergency responses, and non-emergency local transports throughout the city of Sierra Vista and neighboring areas. Depending on department need, may be EMT Basic or Paramedic. FLSA status: Non-Exempt.

This is a 40 hour per week position working Monday through Friday, 0900-1800.

Essential functions included in the job description may include tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics.  The list of tasks is illustrative only and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class.
TASKS:
Performs general maintenance of fire station along with other crew members

Checks tools, equipment, supplies, and materials of each ambulance to ensure that all are in proper operating condition

Responds to structure fires, hazardous materials, or special rescue incidents as medical sector

Performs a variety of emergency medical activities at fire, accident, hazardous material, or other emergency situations as a certified emergency medical care technician EMCT

Initiates pre-hospital medical care to individuals

Provides basic life support and assists paramedic personnel, or provides advanced life support if certified as a paramedic, at emergency scenes

Participates in public education/information events, such as station tours or group presentations

Participates in regular training/drills

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS & OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:
Knowledge of:
First aid, CPR, and other basic emergency medical care techniques and methods

Advanced life support techniques, as required of a certified paramedic

Streets, addresses, and locations throughout the city of Sierra Vista, with familiarity of neighboring communities and surrounding areas

Applicable state, federal, and local statutes, codes, and ordinances

The use and purpose of a variety of specialized equipment, tools, and apparatus used in rescue and emergency medical situations

Pertinent OSHA laws, regulations, and requirements

Skills in:
Using a personal computer with basic office software, including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and presentation applications

Safe and proper use of all specialized EMS equipment, vehicles, apparatus, and materials

Understanding and interpreting complex statues, ordinances, regulations, and standards

Applying basic and/or advanced emergency medical assistance techniques

Working effectively in hazardous environments subject to infectious/contagious diseases, blood borne pathogens, personal injury, quickly changing priorities, and the ability to remain calm during emergency situations

Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other department EMS personnel, City staff, fire suppression staff, and the general public

Presenting complex subjects to a variety of audiences at an appropriate level of understanding geared for the listeners

Following oral instructions under stressful situation

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:  High school diploma, or equivalent; Successful completion of Medic Mile physical abilities entrance test OR a valid CPAT (dated no more than 12 months prior to the time of interview) will be accepted in lieu of Medic Mile; Arizona EMCT certifications; Healthcare provider CPR certification. Valid Arizona driver’s license.

Preferred:  Arizona paramedic certification; ACLS/PALS certifications; Associate degree

Degree must be from an institution accredited by one of the six regional accreditation boards:

  1. MSA – Middle States Association
  2. NASC – Northwest Association of Schools & Colleges
  3. NCA – North Central Association of Colleges & Schools
  4. NEASC – New England Association of Schools & Colleges
  5. SACS – Southern Association of Colleges & Schools
